Nederlands: Document. Vrijheidsbrief of manumissie voor een slaaf, Alexander, geboren augustus 1855 en toebehoord hebbend aan H.A.Statius Muller. De brief is uitgegeven op de dag dat slavernij, officieel, werd afgeschaft: 1 juli 1863. De uitgever van de brief is de (voormalig) eigenaar van de slaaf, Muller. De jongen krijgt in dit besluit de geslachtsnaam Noote.
Een manumissie is doorgaans het onder bepaalde voorwaarden vrijlaten van slaven vóór de afschaffing van de slavernij in 1863. Oorspronkelijk betrof het afspraken tussen eigenaar en slaaf, maar al gauw probeerde de overheid er grip op te krijgen. De vrijheid van de slaven was aan allerlei voorwaarden gebonden, en als aan een deel daarvan niet werd voldaan, kon hij of zij terug vervallen in slavernij (Encyclopedie Suriname, 1977:392). Voorbeelden van deze beperkingen waren het uitgaansverbod na 21:00 uur, verbod op omgang met slaven, en de plicht hun vroege meesters respect te bewijzen. |
