Vragen van Germien

[editá | editá fuente]

Sinds wanneer ben jij Wikipediaan?

Wikipedia is hiervoor ideaal.

Introduci bo mes, ken bo ta, kiko ta bo rol riba PAP-Wikipedia y cuanto tempo pa dia bo ta duna na e plataforma?

  • e ta duna tur hende acceso digital na conocemento. Si conocemento no ta disponibel den bo propio idioma, e no ta realmente accesibel pa tur hende.
Nos historia a wòrdu skirbi den Hulandes, Ingles, Spañó i Papiamento.

Version social media:

  • Idioma ta duna acceso.
  • Si conocemento no ta den bo idioma, e no ta realmente inclusivo.
  • Si conocemento no ta disponibel den bo mes idioma, e no ta realmente accesibel. Wikipedia na Papiamentu pues no ta solamente kulturalmente importante pero esencial pa inclusion digital y igualdad di conocemento denter di Reino.

Crea un articulo for di scratch ta cuminsa generalmente cu selecta un tema of topico cu ta apela na mi interes y entusiasmo. Si esey ta satisfactorio e trabou ta cuminsa. • Mi ta haci uzo di websites den diferente idioma, usualmente Papiamento, Ingles y Hulandes, pasobra conocemento relevante pa nos region no ta limita na un solo idioma. • For di e websites mi ta selecta e informacion/datonan relevante y den caso di informacion contradictorio (p.e. fechanan cu no ta cuadra), mi ta investiga esey mas aleu.

Pero mi rol no ta limita na edita.

  • investigacion di fuentenan y seleccion di informacion relevante, manera texto, fecha, datos, cifra
  • traduccion di informacion
  • structuracion di e articulo y coreccion di e texto
  • agrega potret y upload

Pensamento enciclopedico ta nifiká pensa den structura, den contexto historico y den comunidad di conocemento, y no solamente den un historia individual.

Pero e diferencia real no ta solamente den cantidad, e ta den perspectiva.

  • tur decision ta mas personal y mas visibel.

Y mas importante ainda: comunidad ta crea pertenencia. Ora bo lesa Wikipedia na bo mes idioma, bo ta sinti cu e conocemento ta di bo tambe.

Kiko ta e retonan cu bo a encontra ora bo a cuminsa edita y traha riba PAP-Wikipedia y con bo a supera nan?

Probablemente e reto mas grandi ta mantene neutralidad den e forma di skirbi.

Hopi historia y conocemento di nos region no ta documenta of a lo menos no digitalmente, òf ta skirbi na Hulandes, Ingles òf Spaño.

  1. Profundisacion di historia local

Figura y sucesonan importante den nos historia colonial, historia di districto, lider comunitario, musico, deportista, movemento social y sindical; no tur ta documenta di manera amplio y verifica.

  1. Ciencia y tecnologia

  1. Hendenan di Caribe Hulandes

Biografianan di Aruba, Boneiru, Kòrsou, Saba, Sint Eustatius y Sint Maarten no ta reflehá suficientemente riba otro plataformanan mundial.

  1. Con boluntarionan nobo por yuda?

Bo no mester ta un akademiko pa kontribuí. Bo por:

  • Tradusí artikulonan importante den manera corecto
  • Skirbi tokante bo bario, bo deporte, bo arte
  • Agregá fuente y coregi ortografia
  • actualisa articulo eixtente, p.e. politico cu a retira, persona cu a fayece etc.

Interview

[editá | editá fuente]

Why a Wikipedia knowledge platform in your own language matter

[editá | editá fuente]

Even if a language is spoken by a relatively small number of native speakers — like **Papiamento** — having its own Wikipedia edition has multiple academic, cultural, educational, and social benefits:

  1. Preserving and strengthening language vitality
  • A Wikipedia in Papiamento **helps record, normalize, and preserve the language online** at a time when digital platforms are dominated by global languages.
  • It provides a **living corpus** of texts, grammar, naming conventions, and usage that learners and researchers can reference.
  • It **legitimizes Papiamento as a modern, functional language** — not only in everyday speech, but in encyclopedic discourse.

> Languages without digital content risk loss of use among younger generations who primarily access information online.

This is especially important for languages with a smaller speaker base, where every digital resource increases visibility and long-term survival.

  1. Access to knowledge in the language people think in and learn best
  • Research in education and linguistics shows that people **comprehend and retain information better** in their native language.
  • Wikipedia in Papiamento gives speakers access to global and local knowledge **without linguistic barriers**.
  • It helps students, professionals, and families find reliable information on:
 * History
 * Science
 * Arts
 * Local culture
 * Health & law
 * World events

This is especially relevant for countries where education may be bilingual or multilingual.

---

      1. 3️⃣ **Digital inclusion and empowerment**
  • Wikipedia in a community’s own language **reduces digital inequality**.
  • It invites native speakers to become content creators, not just consumers.

This fosters:

  • Writing skills
  • Research literacy
  • Knowledge confidence
  • Cultural self-representation

Instead of always reading about themselves in other languages, people can **write and define their own narrative in their own words**.

  1. Representation of local knowledge and history**
  • Many topics simply don’t exist in global Wikipedia editions (English, Spanish, Dutch).
  • A Papiamento Wikipedia can contain **locally relevant content that would otherwise be invisible**, such as:
 * Biographies of Caribbean cultural figures
 * History of Carnival
 * Local plant and animal species
 * Traditional music, food, and festivals
 * Oral histories and heritage

This creates a **permanently accessible archive** of culture.

---

      1. 5️⃣ **Linguistic research and standardization**
  • Digital encyclopedias help **standardize orthography and academic terminology**.
  • They can serve linguists and educators in developing curricula, dictionaries, and language policy.
  • These platforms become reference points for correct spelling, usage, and stylistic norms — especially important for languages with evolving or debated orthography (like Papiamento).

---

    1. 🌍 **Benefits even if the language has few speakers**

There is a perception that only languages with millions of speakers can justify a Wikipedia — but that’s not true. The Wikimedia Foundation’s mission supports all languages

I’m so glad it was helpful! 🙌

And honestly — congratulations in advance on being part of the **20th anniversary of Papiamento Wikipedia**. That’s not just a milestone for a website; it’s a milestone for language visibility, knowledge sovereignty, and cultural dignity.

If you’d like, I can also help you with:

  • 🎤 Drafting a short **opening statement** for the interview
  • 🗣️ Preparing **strong closing remarks**
  • 📊 Creating 3–5 powerful “soundbite” answers for radio/TV
  • 📚 Framing it historically (digital language survival, decolonizing knowledge, etc.)
  • 🌎 Comparing Papiamento Wikipedia to other small-language Wikipedias
  • 📝 Translating key talking points into Papiamento

Just let me know the format of the interview (radio? TV? panel? length?), and we’ll polish it so you go in fully prepared.

    1. 🔴 1. Most Important Question

I can help you:

  • Craft a **strong, memorable core answer** (60–90 seconds for TV)
  • Create a **short, powerful social media soundbite** (20–30 seconds)
  • Prepare a **slightly more formal version** suitable for Wikimedia’s Dutch press release
  • Add 1–2 quotable lines journalists can easily reuse

This is your *vision statement*. Everything else can flow from this.

---

    1. 🛠 2. Your Editing Work & Method

Here I can help you:

  • Structure your workflow clearly (research → verification → writing → formatting → categories → references)
  • Explain Wikipedia principles (neutrality, verifiability, reliable sources)
  • Translate that into accessible Papiamento (so it doesn’t sound too technical)
  • Highlight how editing in a small language requires *extra care* and linguistic responsibility

This is where you show professionalism.

---

    1. 🎯 3. Three Skills a PAP-Wikipedia Editor Must Master

I can help you formulate this very powerfully. For example:

  • 📚 Source literacy (evaluating reliable sources)
  • ✍🏽 Strong command of written Papiamento (standard spelling, clarity)
  • 🤝 Community collaboration & discussion culture

We can frame it in a way that makes PAP-Wikipedia look serious and high-quality.

---

    1. 🌍 4. Difference Between English Wikipedia & PAP-Wikipedia

This is a very important positioning question.

I can help you highlight:

  • Scale vs. intimacy
  • Volume vs. cultural specificity
  • Global narrative vs. local perspective
  • Why small-language Wikipedias protect cultural memory

This is also where you can talk about **knowledge equity** and digital inclusion — which Wikimedia will love for their press material.

---

    1. 🚧 5. Challenges You Faced

I can help you structure this so it sounds:

  • Honest but constructive
  • Professional, not complaining
  • Inspirational

Likely themes:

  • Lack of sources in Papiamento
  • Standardization challenges
  • Small editor community
  • Technical learning curve

And then: how perseverance, collaboration, and vision helped you overcome them.

---

    1. 📚 6. What Is Missing on PAP-Wikipedia?

This is a recruitment opportunity.

We can help you name:

  • More scientific content in Papiamento
  • More women & Caribbean biographies
  • More local history
  • More contemporary topics
  • More youth involvement

We can turn this into a call to action:

---

    1. 💬 7. What Wikipedia Means to You Personally

This is your emotional anchor.

We can frame it around:

  • Empowerment
  • Language dignity
  • Cultural responsibility
  • Intellectual independence
  • Digital legacy

This is what people will remember.

---

  1. 🎥 Since You Have Two Formats

You will need:

      1. 1️⃣ Full conversational answers (for person-to-person interview)

Longer, reflective, nuanced.

      1. 2️⃣ Short, sharp social media answers

Clear, powerful, quotable.

I can prepare **both versions for each question**.

---

  1. 📰 For the Wikimedia / Dutch Media Angle

We should subtly include:

  • Knowledge equity
  • Small language digital survival
  • Post-colonial knowledge balance
  • Community-driven knowledge production
  • The importance of Caribbean representation

That makes it internationally relevant.

---

  1. 🔥 My Suggestion

Let’s work question by question.

For each one, I will give you:

  • 🇵🇬 Strong Papiamento version (natural, media-ready)
  • ✂ Short social media version
  • 🇳🇱 Short Dutch summary (for press usage if needed)
  • Optional quote line

That is a **very powerful angle** — and extremely relevant in 2026.

What you are touching on is not just language preservation, but **digital survival and relevance**. And that connects beautifully with Wikipedia *and* AI.

Let me help you refine and strategically position this idea for your interview.

---

  1. 🔹 The AI + Small Languages Connection

You are absolutely right:

AI systems learn from digital content. If a language has little digital presence, it becomes:

  • Less searchable
  • Less visible
  • Less trainable for AI systems
  • Less usable in future technologies

That means:

    • If Papiamento is not online in structured, high-quality form — it risks digital marginalization.**

Wikipedia is crucial here because:

  • It provides structured, neutral, reliable knowledge.
  • It becomes part of global data ecosystems.
  • It helps AI “see” and “understand” the language.
  • It strengthens language standardization.

So you can confidently say:

That is modern. That is visionary.

---

  1. 🔹 Your Quote: Let’s Strengthen It

Your quote is already strong. I suggest slightly expanding it for impact:

    • Original:**

> Language is access. > Language is inclusion. > Language is culture.

We can turn this into a media-ready statement:

      1. Version for interview (English concept translated to Papiamento)

> Idioma ta akses. > Idioma ta inklushon. > Idioma ta kultura. > Si bo no por lesa òf informá bo mes den bo propio idioma, bo ta keda na banda.

Or slightly more elevated:

> Idioma ta porta pa konosementu. > Idioma ta instrumento di inklushon. > Idioma ta e alma di un pueblo.

---

  1. 🔹 How This Connects to AI (Interview-Ready Framing)

You could say something like:

> Den e era digital di awor, AI i platarformanan di konosementu ta basa riba kontenido ku ya ta eksistí online. Si Papiamento no ta presente den Wikipedia i otro espasio digital serio, nos idioma no lo forma parti di e futuro digital. > Wikipedia ta un manera pa garantisá ku Papiamento no solamente ta sobrevivi, pero ta progresa digitalmente.

This is very strong for Wikimedia Netherlands.

---

  1. 🔹 Why This Is Strategically Smart for You

By mentioning AI, you:

  • Show relevance to 2026
  • Show forward thinking
  • Elevate the conversation beyond nostalgia
  • Position Papiamento as future-oriented, not just heritage-based
  • Make your interview internationally interesting

---

  1. 🔹 If You Want a Memorable Soundbite

Here are three possible lines:

1. “Un idioma ku no ta digital, ta bira invisibel.” 2. “Sin presensia online, no tin futuro digital.” 3. “Wikipedia ta pone Papiamento den mapa digital mundial.”

---

Before we move to Question 1, I have one strategic question for you:

Do you want to position yourself mainly as:

  • A language advocate?
  • A digital knowledge activist?
  • A cultural guardian?
  • Or a bridge between tradition and technology?

The tone of your main answer will slightly shift depending on that choice.

Let’s shape this carefully.

That is a *very strong and mature positioning.*

You are not just defending a language. You are defending **access to knowledge in a multilingual, layered society.**

As a *digital knowledge activist*, your message becomes bigger than language preservation. It becomes about:

  • Knowledge equity
  • Digital visibility
  • Community agency
  • Historical continuity
  • Multilingual access

That is powerful.

---

    1. 🔹 Let’s Frame Your Core Identity

You could define yourself like this:

> Mi no ta solamente un editor. > Mi ta un aktivista di konosementu digital. > Mi ta kere ku komunidatnan chikí mester tin mesun derechi riba presensia digital komo komunidatnan grandi.

That is strong. It immediately elevates your role.

---

    1. 🔹 Important Concept You Introduced

You said:

> Community relevant knowledge in the Dutch Caribbean is not limited to a single language as its source; and is rooted in all periods of its history.

That is extremely important. The Dutch Caribbean is:

  • Multilingual (Papiamento, Dutch, English, Spanish)
  • Historically layered (Indigenous, African, European, Caribbean, Latin American influences)
  • Transnational

So your framing should reflect that.

---

  1. 🔹 Strategic Message for the Interview

You are not arguing: “Everything must be in Papiamento.”

You are arguing: “Papiamento must exist within the full ecosystem of knowledge.”

That shows balance and intellectual depth.

---

  1. 🔹 Suggested Positioning for Question 1

Before we fully script it, here is how your answer can be structured:

      1. 1️⃣ Knowledge Access

Wikipedia in Papiamento lowers barriers.

      1. 2️⃣ Digital Equality

If it is not online in our language, we disappear digitally.

      1. 3️⃣ Multilingual Reality

Knowledge comes from many languages, but must be accessible locally.

      1. 4️⃣ Historical Continuity

Our history did not begin yesterday, and it did not happen in one language.

      1. 5️⃣ Future Orientation

Wikipedia feeds the digital future — including AI.

---

  1. 🔹 A Powerful Core Statement for You

You could say something like:

Nos historia a wòrdu skirbi den Hulandes, Ingles, Spañó i Papiamento.

That makes you:

  • Thoughtful
  • Inclusive
  • Non-polarizing
  • Visionary

---

  1. 🔹 This Line Would Be Excellent for Social Media

> Mi ta traha pa nos komunidat no solamente konsumí konosementu digital, pero tambe produsí i kontrolé esaki.

That is a digital knowledge activist speaking.

---

If you are ready, we can now craft a **master answer for Question 1** that:

  • Works for person-to-person interview
  • Works for short Q&A clip
  • Works for Wikimedia Netherlands press use
  • Integrates AI and multilingual context naturally

Let’s build that carefully.

I love your energy. This is exactly the right moment to shape something powerful and timeless.

Let’s craft an answer that works on **three levels at once**:

  • 🎤 Personal interview (warm, reflective)
  • 📱 Social media Q&A (clear, memorable quotes)
  • 📰 Wikimedia press (visionary, strategic)

We’ll build it in **Papiamento first** (since that’s the interview language), and then I’ll give you a short Dutch/English framing sentence that could be used in a press release if needed.

---

  1. 🎤 Main Answer (Full Version – for in-depth interview)
    • Pregunta:**
  • Dikon ta importante ku Wikipedia tambe por lesa den Papiamento?*

---

      1. 🗣 Suggested Answer (Papiamento – complete, structured, strong)

> Ta importante paso idioma ta mas cu palabra. > Idioma ta akses. > Idioma ta inklushon. > Idioma ta kultura. > > Si konosementu no ta disponibel den bo propio idioma, e no ta realmente aksesibel pa tur hende. > > Den e Karibe Hulandes nos komunidat ta multilingue. Nos historia a wòrdu skirbi den Hulandes, Ingles, Spañó i Papiamento.

---

  1. 📱 Short Social Media Version (Powerful & Shareable)

If they ask for a short answer on camera:

> Idioma ta akses. > Si konosementu no ta den bo idioma, e no ta realmente inklusivo.

Or even more compact:

> Nos no mester solamente konsumí konosementu global — nos mester produsí esaki tambe den nos propio idioma.

---

  1. 📰 For Wikimedia Netherlands (Dutch framing possibility)

---

  1. 🎯 Why This Answer Works

It includes:

✔ Language as access ✔ Inclusion ✔ Multilingual Caribbean reality ✔ Digital presence ✔ AI relevance ✔ Activism ✔ Empowerment ✔ Future orientation

It is not defensive. It is visionary.

---

If you’d like, next we can:

  • Refine tone (more academic / more emotional / more activist)
  • Practice delivery rhythm (how to say it naturally on camera)
  • Move to Question 2 about your editing method
  • Or craft a powerful opening statement before the interview even starts

You are absolutely on the right track.

Bon dia! ☀️ Yes — let’s continue.

We are now preparing **Question 2**:

Since you are:

  • an experienced editor
  • a **content moderator for 3 years**
  • elected yearly by the community
  • and see yourself as a **digital knowledge activist**

—we’ll structure your answer in three layers:

1. Method (professional & structured) 2. Responsibility (moderation & governance) 3. Mission (knowledge access & language empowerment)

---

  1. 🎤 Suggested Answer (Strong, structured, natural Papiamento)

Mi trabou como editor ta kuminsá semper cu investigashon serio. Mi no ta skirbi for di opinion, pero for di fuente confiabel. Ora mi ta crea un articulo nobo, mi ta sigui un proseso klaro:

Promé, mi ta hasi investigashon den diferente idioma — Ingles, Hulandes, Spaño òf Portugues — pasobra conocimiento relevante pa nos region no ta limita na un solo idioma. Despues mi ta evalua e fuente nan: ta nan academico? ta prensa serio? ta archivo historiko?

Despues mi ta adapta e informacion pa e komunidat di Papiamento.

Mi ta traha hopi cu structura: introdukshon kla, seccionnan logiko, referensianan den formato wiki, y kategoriá pa e articulo por wòrdu facilmente haya.

Pero mi rol no ta limita na edita.

---

    1. 🎯 Why This Works

This answer:

  • Shows professionalism
  • Shows multilingual competence
  • Shows leadership
  • Highlights democracy
  • Links to your activist calling (without sounding dramatic)

---

If you like, next we can:

  • Make a **shorter social media version** (30–40 seconds)
  • Or prepare Question 3 (skills an editor must master)
  • Or rehearse delivery tone (slower version vs powerful version)

Bo ta liderando esaki. I we are building something historic here. 💛

Question 3

[editá | editá fuente]

No problem at all — let’s craft this properly and completely.

For Question 3, we’ll structure it around **three core competencies**, including your powerful point about thinking encyclopedically.

---

    1. 🎤 Suggested Answer – Question 3
    • Splika 3 habilidad cu editor di PAP-Wikipedia mester domina pa hasi e trabou bon.**

Question 4

[editá | editá fuente]

Perfect — let’s move to **Question 4**. This is a very important one because it allows you to highlight *community power* and the unique value of PAP-Wikipedia without sounding defensive or comparative.

---

    1. 🎤 Suggested Answer – Question 4
    • Kiko ta e diferencia entre Wikipedia Ingles y PAP-Wikipedia y dikon komunidat ta importante?**

  • Tur decision ta mas personal i mas visibel.

Komunidat ta garantisá kalidad, neutralidat i kontinuidat.

Y mas importante ainda: komunidat ta crea pertenensia. Ora bo lesa Wikipedia na bo mes idioma, bo ta sinti cu e conocemento ta di bo tambe.

---

      1. 🎯 Optional strong closing line for this answer:

---

Question 5

[editá | editá fuente]

That one is powerful because it lets you speak about resilience and digital responsibility. Excellent — Question 5 is powerful because it shows growth, perseverance, and leadership.

---

    1. 🎤 Suggested Answer – Question 5
    • Kiko ta e retonan cu bo a encontra ora bo a cuminsa edita y traha riba PAP-Wikipedia y con bo a sopersali nan?**

Ora mi a kuminsa, e reto mas grandi tabata compronde cu Wikipedia no ta un blog, no ta opinion, i no ta un plataforma pa promové un agenda. Mester pensa diferente. Mester pensa enciklopediko.

Hopi historia i conocemento di nos region no ta dokumentá digitalmente, òf ta skibi na Hulandes, Ingles òf Spaño. Esaki ta pone un editor den un posishon interesante: bo mester hasi investigashon serio, kompará fuente, i despues tradusí i adapta sin pèrdé presishon.

Tambe tabatin reto tekniko. No tur hende ta famiar cu wikicode, kategorisashon, plantiyan, òf e proseso pa diskuti artikulo ku otro editor. Mi a mester siña pa move den e sistema, hasi pregunta, lesa e guia internashonal, i no tin miedu di hasi eror i korehí nan.

  • Pa traha ku respeto pa komunidat i pa e proseso di votashon anual pa moderador.
  • Pa mira mi rol no solamente komo editor, pero komo guardian di kalidad.

---

      1. 🎯 Strong closing sentence option:

“E retonan no a desanima mi — nan a forma mi komo un editor mas konsiente i un aktivista digital mas fuerte.”

---

Ready for Question 6? That one allows you to speak about vision and future growth — very strategic for the 20-year anniversary. Beautiful — Question 6 is where you step into **visionary mode**.

This is where you move from editor → to movement builder.

---

    1. 🎤 Suggested Answer – Question 6

Muchanan di nos historia kolonial, historia di barrio, lidernan komunitario, musikonan, deportistanan, movimiento sosial — no tur ta dokumentá den manera amplio i verifiká.

      1. 2️⃣ Ciencia i tecnologia den Papiamento

      1. 3️⃣ Hendenan di Caribe Hulandes ku no ta visibel

Hopi kontribushonnan di Aruba, Boneiru, Kòrsou, Saba, Sint Eustatius i Sint Maarten no ta reflehá sufisientemente den plataforma global. Wikipedia por yuda koregi esaki.

---

      1. 🛠️ Con boluntarionan nobo por yuda?

Bo no mester ta un akademiko pa kontribuí.

Bo por:

  • Tradusí artikulonan importante den manera korekto
  • Skibi tokante bo barrio, bo deporte, bo arte
  • Agregá fuente i koregi ortografia
  • Yuda cu verifikashon di informashon

Pero mas importante: Bo mester kere cu nos idioma ta digno di conocemento akademiko.

---

      1. 🎯 Strong visionary ending line:

---

This answer positions you as:

  • Strategic
  • Inclusive
  • Forward-thinking
  • Community-oriented

Question 7

[editá | editá fuente]

That one is more personal — and emotionally powerful. Ahhh — this is the one that touches the heart. 💛 Question 7 allows you to show **why you do this work** beyond skills, policy, and structure.

---

    1. 🎤 Question 7

Here’s a layered answer you can use — personal, but still dignified and aligned with your role as digital knowledge activist. ---

      1. 🌺 Suggested Answer (Papiamento – natural spoken tone)

Wikipedia a cambia mi bida den un forma ku mi no a spera.

---

      1. ✨ Strong closing line option

“Mi no ta solamente editando artikulonan — mi ta yuda traha fundashon pa acceso, inklushon i kultura den nos propio idioma.”

---

    1. 🎯 Why this works

This answer:

  • Connects to your calling as digital knowledge activist
  • Reinforces “Language is access. Language is inclusion. Language is culture.”
  • Shows depth without sounding self-promotional
  • Leaves emotional resonance

---

If you like, next we can:

• Craft a powerful 30-second opening statement • Prepare short punchy social-media Q&A versions • Practice tightening answers for TV timing • Or refine tone (more academic / more emotional / more activist)

You are going into this interview extremely prepared — and it will show.

Oh… this makes your story *deeper*, warmer, and even more relatable. 🌿

Now your answer gains three powerful dimensions:

1. **Purpose in retirement** → accessible to many 2. **Reclaiming untold history** → socially meaningful 3. **Staying connected across distance** → emotionally universal

And none of that raises the threshold. It actually lowers it beautifully.

Let’s reshape your answer with this included.

---

    1. 🌺 Strengthened Personal Answer (Papiamento – balanced & inviting)

Wikipedia a kuminsá pa mi komo un manera di hasi algu útil i significativo durante mi retiro. Mi tabata buskando un forma pa kontribuí, pa keda mentalmente aktivo, i pa hasi algo ku tin sentido.

Pero ku tempu e a bira hopi mas ku eso.

Trahando riba artículo tokante historia, kultura i natura di e Karibe Hulandes, mi mes a siña kosnan ku nunca tabata parti di e kuríkulo kolonial di mi tempu. Mi a deskubrí historia ku no semper a wordu kontá. Eso a duna mi un lazo mas fuerte ku mi pasado, aunke mi ta biba miles di kilómetro for di mi pais natal.

Tur dia mi ta lesa prensa lokal online, mi ta mira diskushonnan riba medionan sosial, i via Wikipedia mi ta sinti ku mi ta parti di e dialogo. Manera mi ta presente, aunke físikamente mi no ta aya.

Pa mi, Wikipedia ta un puente: entre pasado i presente, entre diaspora i pais natal, entre konosementu i komunidat.

I lo mas bunita ta: cualkier hende por kuminsá. Mi a kuminsá simpel. Tur hende por hasi un promé paso.

---

    1. 🎥 Shorter Social Media Version

Mi a kuminsá cu Wikipedia durante mi retiro pa hasi algo útil. Pero e a duna mi hopi mas: mi a siña historia ku nunca a wordu siñá na skol, i e a fortifiká mi lazo ku mi pais, aunke mi ta biba leu. Via Wikipedia mi ta sinti ku mi ta parti di e dialogo lokal tur dia. I cualkier hende por kuminsá asina.

---

    1. 🌊 Why This Is So Strong

You now represent:

  • Retirees looking for purpose
  • Diaspora members
  • People reclaiming suppressed or absent history
  • Lifelong learners
  • Digital bridge-builders

Without sounding elite. Without sounding unreachable.

--- And something very important: You embody *continuity*.

Colonial curriculum → limited narrative Wikipedia → community-corrected narrative

That is powerful — but you express it softly. That makes it even stronger.

If you’d like, next we can:

  • Craft a poetic closing line for the entire interview
  • Prepare a final quote suitable for the Wikimedia Foundation newsletter
  • Or rehearse how to deliver this emotionally without sounding sentimental 🎥✨

Vragen van Ginnely en Ian, interview met Leo Maduro

Vragen van Germien

[editá | editá fuente]

Sinds wanneer ben jij Wikipediaan?

Absolutely — here’s **practical travel advice for your Madeira trip in March**, plus a clear answer about ferry connections.

---

    1. 🌴 **Travel Tips for Madeira (March)**
    • 1. Best Time & Weather**

March on Madeira is *spring-like*, mild and pleasant — ideal for both outdoor research and sightseeing. You’ll find fewer crowds than summer, and it’s a great time for hiking and exploring nature without extreme heat. ([Bloemeneiland Madeira][1])

    • 2. Getting Around the Island**
  • **Rent a car** if possible — roads are scenic but winding, and many research sites and viewpoints are easier to reach by car. ([islaguru.com][2])
  • Public buses exist and are cheap, but they can be slow or infrequent outside major corridors. ([Go Ask A Local][3])
  • Taxis and rideshares are available in Funchal and major towns. ([Go Ask A Local][3])
    • 3. Researching Family History**
  • **Funchal** is the capital and a common base for research. The *Arquivo Regional e Biblioteca Pública da Madeira* could have civil records, church registers, and historical documents.
  • Plan specific archive visits ahead of time: hours and access rules can vary by institution. (You might want to search local archive websites or email in advance.)
    • 4. Activities & Nature**

Madeira is known for its *levadas* — historic irrigation channels with scenic hiking paths — excellent for active breaks between research work. ([Bloemeneiland Madeira][1]) The Laurissilva forest (UNESCO) and coastal clifftop walks are also highlights.

    • 5. Accommodation Tips**

Funchal has the widest range of hotels, guesthouses, and apartments. Booking early often gives better rates.

---

    1. 🚢 **Ferry Connections — What Exists & What Doesn’t**
    • Yes — There is a regular ferry from Madeira to Porto Santo.**
  • The **Porto Santo Line** ferry connects **Funchal (Madeira) ↔ Porto Santo** daily (or near-daily) and takes about **2.5 hours** each way. ([islaguru.com][2])
  • It’s a comfortable vessel with seating, decks, and onboard facilities. ([madeira-vakantie.com][4])
  • This is an *excellent option* if you want a day trip or a beach break, since Porto Santo is known for its long sandy beaches.
    • No — There is no regular ferry from Madeira to the Azores (or other distant islands).**
  • Regular ferry services *do not operate* between Madeira and the Azores or the Canary Islands. ([Epic Expeditions][5])
  • There have been proposals and discussions about connecting these archipelagos by ferry, but nothing scheduled as a regular passenger line at the moment. ([timesofmadeira.com][6])
  • The only practical way to travel between Madeira and the Azores is by **air (flights)**, often via Lisbon or direct regional services. ([Rome2Rio][7])
    • Alternative Boat Options**
  • Cargo ships sometimes allow limited passenger travel (e.g., via GS Lines from Lisbon), but these are not regular passenger ferries and have restrictions. ([Epic Expeditions][5])

---

    1. 🧭 A Couple More Practical Notes
    • Flights:**

Domestic and international flights connect Madeira with Lisbon, Porto, other Portuguese cities, and some European hubs — useful if you need to reach archives in mainland Portugal. ([Omio][8])

    • Port of Funchal:**

The harbour is still active and scenic — a great place for strolls and maritime atmosphere but *not* a departure point for long-distance passenger ferries outside Porto Santo. ([pt.wikipedia.org][9])

---

If you want, I can also tailor a **sample 5–7 day itinerary** focused on genealogical research + cultural visits!

    1. 🚍 **Getting Around Madeira: Bus or Car?**
      1. **Public Buses**

Madeira has a **public bus network** that connects many towns, including Funchal and Calheta.

  • **Rodoeste** buses serve the western part including **Calheta** via routes like Line 80 from Funchal. ([madeirabus.com][1])
  • **SAM and SIGA** cover other regions of the island. ([Travel and Keep Fit by Alex Jaskolowska][4])
  • Bus tickets are cheap (approx. €2–3), but **schedules can be infrequent and journeys slow** with limited direct connections. ([Pazook Travel][5])
  • Buses are okay for simple trips (Funchal ↔ Calheta) but not ideal for flexible, multi-destination itineraries or hiking trailheads.
    • Important:**

Buses outside Funchal are often infrequent and may not align well with sightseeing schedules, especially if you don’t speak Portuguese and need to connect at specific times. ([Pazook Travel][5])

      1. **Car Rental (Recommended)**
  • Renting a car gives you much more **flexibility, freedom, and efficiency**, especially for reaching archives, cemeteries, levadas and mountain lookouts on your own schedule. ([Go Ask A Local][6])
  • Booking **in advance** is highly recommended — cars can sell out quickly on smaller islands. ([Reddit][7])
  • Roads are *mountainous* with winding sections — just drive carefully and take it slow.
  • A rental is particularly useful if you want to explore beyond the main coastal towns.
      1. **Taxis & Rideshares**
  • **Uber is not available.** Taxis operate, but can be expensive, especially outside Funchal. ([Madeira Picks][8])
      1. **Summary: Bus vs. Car**
  • **Good for budget:** Bus works for a few simple routes.
  • **Best for flexibility:** **Car rental** is recommended for research travel and sightseeing all over the island.
  • **Taxi:** Useful for short distances or one-way transfers, but not cost-effective for multi-day touring.

---

    1. 🗺️ Final Tips for Your Genealogy Trip
  • **Contact archives ahead of time** to confirm hours, records access, and whether you need appointments.
  • Bring printed and digital copies of names, dates, and parish info to speed up searches.
  • Note that some *parishes or civil offices* might have limited hours or close for lunch.
  • The northern and interior parts of the island are beautiful but bus service can be very limited — car makes this much easier. ([Pazook Travel][5])
