Background on Curaçao

[editá | editá fuente]

Curaçao as the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles has a population of about 135.000 people, of which most are born in the Netherlands Antilles. Tourist brochures are full of the fact that we have many nationalities and ethnic groups on the island that live in total harmony, a wonderful melting pot. This is partly true. We have not had any armed or violent ethnic groups’ conflict. There are barely perceptible racial or ethnic tensions. Because of the economic crisis and a by all accounts large influx of (illegal) immigrants ( and ) there are some tensions in the society. There have been accusations by immigrants of discrimination based on ethnicity. Locals are complaining about the influx of people who are taking away jobs and income from Curaçaoans.

Many of the ethnic groups (first generation) are not large very large, but their children born here and most become Dutch citizens and are then grouped for all intents and purposes with all the other Dutch Nationals.

There are about 150 different Nationalities (place of birth) living on the island. [1]

The largest groups of (recent) immigrants are the European Dutch (8200), (6800), Colombians (2500) and (2082).

The population is mostly made up of descendants of Africans. Descendants of white Europeans and Sephardic and Ashkenazi (Portuguese) Jews. Trade and commerce have brought other ethnic groups like East Indians and Arabs. The Hispanic population is increasing rapidly and a special concern with this group is the large number of illegal immigrants on the islands (, ). Estimates run as high as 30.000.

Census survey does not ask about race or ethnicity. The only question asked is about citizenship, and this does not give an accurate picture of race and ethnicity. Some ethnic groups like East Indians might not be large in numbers but carry considerably economic power since most of them are in the clothing and electronics retail business.

The upper class consists mainly of Europeans and their descendants, Jews and their descendants a mix, which we call Curacaoan white. Although blacks and ’coloreds’ have been ‘breaking through’, the picture hasn’t changed much from the beginning of the 1900’s when the Shell oil Refinery established itself here. Europeans, local whites and Jews lived in separate parts of the city and the immigrants from the and Portuguese were set up in other ‘lower-class’ areas around the refinery. If you drive around the island today you will notice that mostly blacks, local and other Caribbean people populate the poorer neighborhoods, and some Hispanics and few others like the Portuguese thrown in here and there.

The best indicator is the fact that most welfare recipients are female and black
