DeskripshonMuurschildering Hidden hero Medardo de Marchena door Avantia Damberg.jpg
English: Text on mural: Considera si awe nos a logra haci nada grandi pa nos patria. ta pasobra nos ta descuida muher. Translation: Consider that if today we haven't done anything major for our nation, it is because we neglect women.
Text on plaquette: This mural project is about paying hommage and putting people in the spot that are heroes for Curaçao, as they contributed to the country in het emancipation and development, but are not (yet) much recognized. The hidden heroes here in Hanchi Angel Job are Joceline Clemencia, Pater Brenneker, Shon May Henriquez, and Medardo de Marchena. Medardo de Marchena (1899-1968) came up for equality and the rights of women early on in the 30's, father and writer. With his writings he tried to awaken the people to the fact that the then colonial Dutch government, the Roman Catholic church and the Shell refinery were keeping the people uneducated and submissive. For this reason he was banned to Bonaire during WWII for five years into an internment camp to keep him quiet. Still his writings are locked away in the Netherlands, but should be published and come back.
